The Year of the Snake arrived in grand fashion at Imperial International School, as students, teachers, and parents came together for a memorable Chinese New Year celebration filled with tradition, creativity, and excitement. The event was a time to embrace wisdom, renewal, and prosperity, just as the snake symbolises intelligence and transformation—encouraging us to grow and welcome new opportunities in the year ahead.
A Grand Opening to Usher in Prosperity
The celebration commenced with an opening ceremony led by the Principal and Deputy Principal, who were joined by parents who generously sponsored mandarin oranges—a symbol of luck and fortune in Chinese culture. Their presence and support highlighted the strong community spirit within the school, making the event even more meaningful.
Creativity Shines in Festive Competitions
Before the Chinese New Year break, students enthusiastically participated in two exciting competitions that showcased their creativity and appreciation for cultural traditions.
🎨 Lantern-Making Competition – Students crafted intricate and colourful lanterns, symbolising hope and brightness for the new year.
🎭 Fan-Making Competition – Using angpows (red packets), students designed beautiful fans, reflecting the festive spirit and good fortune associated with Chinese New Year.
These competitions encouraged students to explore their artistic talents while deepening their understanding of cultural traditions, making the celebrations all the more engaging and enriching.
Cultural Performances and Traditions Bring Good Fortune
The festive energy continued with a spectacular lion dance performance 🦁🥁, a long-standing tradition believed to ward off negative energy and bring luck for the year ahead. The rhythmic beats of the drums and the dynamic movements of the lion mesmerised the audience, setting a powerful and auspicious tone for the celebrations.
Adding to the excitement, students took the spotlight with lively performances, featuring auspicious greetings, traditional songs, and energetic dances 🎶🕺. Their passion and enthusiasm filled the school with warmth, symbolising the unity and joy that Chinese New Year represents.
